Universities in Canada provide undergraduate and graduate education in a wide variety of fields. There are close to 15,000 degree and non-degree programs of study. Generally, Bachelor’s degree programs take between 3 to 4 years of full time study to complete. A Master’s degree programs require between 1 to 3 years of full time study to complete. Doctoral degree programs require between 2 to 3 years of full time study after Master’s degree. Most universities also offer short term Graduate Certificate Programs or Graduate Diploma programs.

Graduate certificate programs are career-related programs designed specifically for college and university graduates. They are 1 year programs that may be completed in 2 or 3 semesters. Graduate certificate programs build on previous post-secondary education knowledge. Many of programs offer Canadian work experience opportunities through internships.

Graduate Diploma Programs
Graduate diploma programs are similar to graduate certificate programs except that they take a minimum of two years to complete. They are recommended for graduates who desire career development or career switch opportunities. Both colleges and universities offer graduate diploma programs.

Master’s Degree Programs
Popularly known as second degree, Masters studies in Canada requires the completion of a 4-year Bachelor’s degree (Honors) or its equivalent with a specified grade determined by the academic faculty or department to which the application is made.
Applicants from Francophone West Africa where who go through 3-year Bachelor’s degree programs may request for credential evaluation and grade conversion from certified service providers. This enables them to transfer some credits earned from their home country towards a 4-year bachelor’s degrees provided the intended program of study is same or similar to that pursued by the applicant in his home country. In most cases, students are able to transfer only up to two years of study and may need to study for additional two years in order to earn a bachelor’s degree.
Master’s degree generally builds on a specialized aspect of previous study done at undergraduate level. There are many fields of study at Master’s level in Canadian institutions.

Pre-master’s Programs
These programs can best be described as foundation programs to Master’s level studies in specific fields. They typically require up to two academic semesters of full time study depending on the needs of the applicant as determined by the university in question. The program provides a valuable window of opportunity to those who falls a little short of the normal admission requirements and those who need to advance their English Language and other learning skills. Some universities teach programs such as critical thinking, research methods, presentation skills and others which are very crucial to success in graduate study. It’s highly recommended for students from francophone West Africa.
